At the age of three months, her family returned to the Dominican Republic. They returned to the United States in 1960. Julia received her Bachelor Of Arts in 1971 from Middlebury College graduating Summa Cum Laude, College Scholar and Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her Masters In Creative Writing from Syracuse University in 1971. Julia taught English and writing at Phillips Andover Academy, the University of Vermont, George Washington University, the University of Illinois, Middlebury College and is currently Writer-in-Residence at Middlebury College. Before We Were Free received the Pura Belpre Award in 2004 and Return To Sender received the Pura Belpre Award in 2010. Julia and her husband, Bill Eichner, started a sustainable farm-literacy center called Alta Garcia in the Dominican Republic. They live on a farm in the Champlain Valley in Vermont.
