He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA in Graphic Design/Art Studio. Long did graduate studies at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. In addition to writing and illustrating children's books, Long has been an illustrator for the Gibson Greeting Card Company and an editorial illustrator for numerous magazines, most notably Forbes, Time, Atlantic Monthly and Sports Illustrated.
