She received a BA from the University of California at Davis, a MA from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D in English from the University of Minnesota. Nelson taught at the University of Connecticut from 1978-2002 and from 2002-2004 at the University of Delaware. She is the founder and director of Soul Mountain Retreat, a small writers' colony. Carver: A Life In Poems received a Newbery Honor and a Coretta Scott King Author Honor in 2002. Wreath For Emmett Till received a Coretta Scott King Author Honor in 2006.
