The author died May 18, 2012. She graduated from Penn State University and worked as a reporter. The author and her husband, John, had three children. Twig writes children's books, Craig and Luke are environmental scientists. George was best known for writing fiction about the outdoors. Thirteen Moons was one of her well-known series. "My Side of the Mountain" was a 1960 Newbery Honor Book. "Julie of the Wolves" was the 1973 Newbery Medal Winner.
