She was born in Frankfurt, Germany, during her father's military service. She grew up in New York City. After attending Music and Art High School in New York, Crews went to Yale University, where she received a B.A. in 1985, majoring in art with an emphasis on photography. She worked as a freelance animation artist/coordinator while developing her photography and illustration portfolio. Crews has been praised for her creative use of photographs to bring out the mood and inner experiences of children. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, where she continues to create illustrations for her own stories and for other authors that reflect her interest in people and in the city where she grew up.
