He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. Selznick worked as a bookseller and creating displays for Eeyore's Books for Children in New York City. He is also a puppeteer and has performed in an underwater puppet show and in a puppet ballet. His sister is a Kindergarten teacher and his brother is a brain surgeon. Selznick's grandfather's cousin, David O. Selznick, was the producer of classic movies such as Gone With the Wind and King Kong. The author and illustrator's hobbies include the movies, the theater and going out for sushi. Selznick is best known for his illustrations of picture books and chapter books. "Amelia and Eleanor Go For a Ride" was an ALA Notable Children's Book in 2000. "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins" was a Caldecott Honor Book and an ALA Notable Children's Book in 2002.
