She graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. Woodson has worked as a drama therapist with runaways and homeless children. She has one daughter named Toshi. Her hobbies include making scarves and quilts. Best known for writing books about difficult issues young people face, many of the author's books have received Coretta Scott King Honors and several have been named ALA Notable Books and ALA Best Books for Young Adults. "Locomotion" received a Coretta Scott King Author Honor and it was an ALA Notable Children's Book in 2004. "Show Way" was a Newbery Honor Book in 2005.
