She was an art major at Skidmore College and she also received a degree in Occupational Therapy at Columbia University. Auch then worked as an occupational therapist, designed billboards and was an illustrator for Pennywhistle Press. The author currently teaches writing at Vassar College. Auch and her husband, Herm, have two grown children, Ian and Kat. She does school visits. Her hobbies include a fascination with chickens, which shows up in many of her books. Auch is best known for her picture books. Her books frequently appear on state award lists. "Easter Egg Farm" was an IRA/CBC Children's Choice title.
