Astrid Lindgren Birthplace: Vimmerby, Sweden Author Biography Astrid Lindgren was born November 14, 1907 in Vimmerby, Sweden. She died January 28, 2002. Lindgren grew up on a farm and her first job was in the office of the Royal Automobile Club. She had a job censoring Swedish soldiers' letters before World War II broke out. She later worked in Stockholm as a children's book editor for many years. The author had seven grandchildren when she died. Lindgren is best known for her series of books about Pippi Longstocking. She wrote over one hundred books. They have been translated into over fifty languages and several have been made into movies. The author was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1958. UNESCO awarded her the International Book Award in 1993. Sweden named its most prestigious children's book award the Astrid Lindgren Prize. Updating Results ...
