He went to Gettysburg College and Johns Hopkins University. Spinelli worked for the publisher Chilton Company and served in the U.S. Navy Air Reserve from 1966 to 1972. The author and his wife, Eileen, also a children's book writer, have seven children and eleven grandchildren. His hobbies include following football. Spinelli is best known for his novels. "Maniac Magee" won the Newbery Medal in 1991. "Wringer" was a Newbery Honor Book in 1998 and an ALA Notable Children's Book. "Milkweed" won the 2003 Golden Kite Award for Fiction.
