Author Biography

    Verna Aardema was born in Michigan on June 6, 1911.  She received a B.A. in Agriculture & Applied Science at Michigan State College.  Aardema taught school for 24 years and was a staff correspondent for the Muskegon Chronicle for 21 years.  The author was married to Dr. Joel Vugteveen and had two children, Dr. Austin Aardema and Paula Dufford.
     Aardema is best known for her picture books focused on African folk tales.  She received the 1976 Caldecott Medal for "Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears."  The author died May 11, 2000.
