She graduated from Smith College and received a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts. In addition to writing children's books, she also is an editor for a children's book publisher. The author and her husband, David Stemple, a photographer, have three children, Heidi, Adam and Jason. Her hobbies include kite flying. She is also known as Jane Yolen Stemple. Yolen is best known for her picture books. "The Emperor and the Kite" was a 1968 Caldecott Honor Book. "The Girl Who Cried Flowers and Other Tales" was the 1974 Golden Kite Winner and an ALA Notable Book. "Moon Ribbon" was a Golden Kite Honor Book in 1976.
