She attended Trinity University and then the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Stanley initially worked as a medical illustrator. The author and her second husband, Peter Vennema, have three children, Catherine, Tamara and John. Her favorite pastime is traveling and she enjoys author visits. Stanley is best known for her nonfiction picture books, although she occasionally does novels such as the Time-Traveling Twins series. "Farmer in the Dell" was an IRA Childrens Choice Book.
