She was educated at King College and Union Theological Seminary. The author spent a number of years as a missionary in Japan. Paterson and her husband John Barstow, a minister, have four children, Lin, John Jr., David and Mary. She is also known as Katherine Womeldorf Paterson. Paterson is best known for her novels. "Master Puppeteer" won the National Book Award and the Edgar Allan Poe Award in 1977. "Bridge to Terabithia" was the Newbery Winner in 1978. "Great Gilly Hopkins" won the 1978 Christopher Award, the 1979 National Book Award, was a SLJ Best Book and a 1979 Newbery Honor Book. "Jacob Have I Loved" won the 1981 Newbery Award. The author won the Regina Medal in 1988. "Tale of the Mandarin Ducks" was the Boston Globe-Horn Book Picture Book Award Winner in 1991. Paterson received the Ludington Award for her contribution to children's literature in 1995. "Jip" was the Scott O'Dell Winner in 1997.
