Tate earned an AAA degree from Des Moines Area Community College. His work history includes graphics reporter at the Des Moines Register and Austin American-Statesman newspapers, and publication designer for the Perfection Learning Corporation. He was the art director at an advertising and market reserch firm, and a graphic artist at a print shop. Tate is the founding host of The Brown Bookshelf and a member of the WeNeedDiverseBooks organization. In addition to children's books, he licenses his art to product manufacturers.
