She earned her undergraduate and Ph.D. in Romance Literatures from Harvard University. Napoli is a Professor of Linguistics at Swarthmore College. The author and her husband Barry have two children, Elena and Michael. Her hobbies include gardening and baking. She also enjoys author visits. Napoli is best known for her novels, although she has written a number of picture books as well. "Stones in Water" was a 1998 Golden Kite Winner, an ALA Best Book and an ALA Notable Children's Book.
