Summary:
Inori is a little girl who dreams of becoming a figure skater. Yet, the obstacles to this dream feel insurmountable: Inori's already "too old" (she's 11); she's always had trouble at school; and, worst of all, her older sister's skating dreams ended in failure, so her mother is dead set against putting her other daughter through a similar experience. Still, the rink is the only place Inori can be herself, and she's out on the ice when a fateful meeting takes place. In manga graphic novel format.

School Library Journal - 12/06/2024 Gr 6 Up—Tsukasa's career as a competitive figure skater is over, and now he's struggling to make ends meet working at an ice rink while racking up rejections from ice shows. After running into a young skater named Inori, who is struggling to get her sports career off the ground, Tsukasa finds it impossible to ignore their similarities: they both got a late start in skating, had to try to train themselves, and work to cover their fees. When Inori and her mother come to the rink,, Tsukasa gets a firsthand look at the potential she holds and is determined to become her coach. Inori is not lacking in determination either, and with resolve, the two team up to turn her into a star. With her beautiful skating skills and his ice dance background, they tackle badge tests and prepare for Inori's first competition. Tsurumaikada does not shy away from the realities of competitive sports and details the cost athletes and their families face, both financially and in added stress, and how not everyone can be the winner. The story covers the many steps that take place before a competition ever occurs, and the athletic drive and perseverance to make it. VERDICT Bolstered by dynamic art and a deep understanding of figure skating elements, this manga shines, just like Inori's skating. Highly recommended.—Lisa Rowland - Copyright 2024 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
