Booklist - 08/01/2018 Though woodpeckers are familiar birds, they're more commonly heard than seen. The Sills' latest nature book offers interesting facts about woodpeckers as well as images of many varieties, from North American birds, such as northern flickers, to species found in South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Each left-hand page features Cathryn Sill’s text in large type, with a line or two introducing each woodpecker, its habitat, physical features, and/or activities, along with the common name for each animal appearing in the accompanying picture. On the facing page, a large, well-composed watercolor painting goes beyond offering a precise, decorative image of a particular species by illustrating one or more woodpeckers in action within their habitats: pounding their bills against tree trunks, using their long tongues to get insects, and drumming on hard surfaces to communicate with each other. An appended section offers a small version of each painting, along with a paragraph of additional information about the animals shown. A handsome addition to the dependable About series. - Copyright 2018 Booklist.
