School Library Journal - 09/29/2023 Gr 2–5—Savage creates the fantastic story of scientist Dr. Morley, who is gray-haired, white, stalwart, and appearing more like a stereotypical librarian than an intrepid Shackleton-like Arctic explorer. Dr. Morley adores jellyfish, especially the elusive giant Arctic jellyfish. Following years of research, Dr. Morley and her crew set out to search for the shy invertebrate in the icy Arctic waters. On their hunt, they encounter a vast array of wildlife and natural wonders, from orcas to auroras. Savage's mystical and mesmerizing illustrations provide a glimpse beneath the cold surface as well as cutaways into the ship that carries the explorers. Will Dr. Morley find her jackpot in the deep waters, or will it charmingly find her? VERDICT An enchanting glimpse into scientific research, exploration, and discovery in the remotest location. Especially recommended for elementary students interested in animal science and underwater exploration.—Brittany McMahon - Copyright 2023 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
Booklist - 07/23/2023 Dr. Morely is positive that the giant Arctic jellyfish is more than a myth, so she assembles a team to sail to the frigid north. The bright red research vessel matches the team’s hats, boots, and puffy coats, all of which pop against the icy blues and whites of their Arctic surroundings. Over the next several months (and wonderful double-page spreads), Dr. Morley’s expedition searches for the elusive jellyfish but never manages to spot it. It, however, spots them, and young readers will get a kick out of all the team’s close calls as they peer over the wrong side of an iceberg and float directly on top of the giant Arctic jellyfish’s adorably ethereal form. This delightful adventure more than tips its woolly red cap to Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, from the detailed cross-sections of the research vessel—individual crew members busy in its many rooms—to its general aesthetic of symmetrical whimsy. Try this with sweet-spirited explorers and young fans of Elisa Sabatinelli’s The Secret of the Magic Pearl (2021). - Copyright 2023 Booklist.
