Booklist - 05/15/2023 The Careers in STEM series (4 new titles) offers short, comprehensive snapshots of both common and high-interest jobs in an early-reader format. Each entry begins by introducing a scientist, engineer, or developer in the field and continues with descriptions of what people in these professions do, their work environments, some of the equipment or technology they use, and typical career paths from education to job, especially what academic areas are often studied. Throughout the books, simple text combines with large, colorful photographs, numerous labeled terms, equal male and female representation, and depictions of people of color to provide accessibility and inclusivity. Environmental Engineer explains various ways these engineers keep environments clean and safe. Additional infographics in each volume profile an innovator in the field, link “real life” work examples to the career, and connect the career to each component of STEM. Solid introductions that will pique curiosity in STEM fields. - Copyright 2023 Booklist.
School Library Journal - 04/01/2023 Gr 1–3—In four volumes, this series focuses on four STEM careers (zoologist, electrical engineer, environmental engineer, video game developer) and some of the basic requirements, challenges, and opportunities of each. These books, while still serving the needs of early readers, feature slightly more complex sentences, longer chapters, and more advanced concepts than their "Blastoff Beginner" series counterparts. With no more than five or six sentences on each page, they remain accessible enough for those who are working to read independently, build fluency, learn new words, and practice critical thinking skills. VERDICT This series imparts rich information while being accessible to early readers; educators and caregivers may appreciate the activity prompts and resources for further learning included in each book. - Copyright 2023 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
