Booklist - 07/01/2019 Waylon’s home is in turmoil. Waiting impatiently for the upcoming science fair, he learns that it will take place on the night that his 14-year-old sister Charlotte’s avant-garde “performance piece” debuts, which also coincides with his father’s looming deadline for finishing his screenplay. In a worrisome development, Mom has been coming home late and acting strangely happy. Clearly she has a secret. When a change in Dad’s plans keeps him from performing his potentially humiliating part in Charlotte’s performance, she’s distraught. Now Waylon’s treasured science-related dreams vie with his desire to do the right thing. After he steps up to help his father, his sister, and a friend, he reaps unexpected rewards. The third chapter book in the Waylon series, an offshoot of Pennypacker’s Clementine series, features well-defined, sympathetic characters during a period of mounting stress. Well-paced, involving, and sometimes amusing, the story weaves the characters’ individual concerns and actions into a satisfying whole. Frazee’s lively, expressive pencil drawings capture the action and the characters’ emotions with empathy and wit. An imaginative addition to this rewarding series. - Copyright 2019 Booklist.
