Booklist - 08/01/2021 Bass, a trans boy, can’t believe he's finally going on date with Rosie. She’s taking him out on an old wooden boat to her favorite island. But far onto the water, a massive storm hits. Whitecaps slam into the sides of the boat, they lose the motor and oars in the waves, and in trying to steer through the gale, they are tossed overboard. Eventually, they make their way, battered, near-drowned, and almost hypothermic, to a jutting rock surrounded by unscalable cliffs. When Rosie proves too injured to continue, Bass must swallow his fear and go for help alone. The white-knuckled action of this story is terrific, kicking off immediately and steering through chapters ending in delicious cliff-hangers. While there are skillful nods from this trans, queer author to those aspects of Bass' identity, including coping with anxiety and body dysphoria, the protagonist’s trans experience becomes brilliantly plot-forward when Bass ingeniously uses his binding tape to bandage a leg wound. This is a high-stakes, adrenaline-fueled adventure to be eagerly devoured in one sitting. - Copyright 2021 Booklist.
