Booklist - 11/01/2022 A fictional framework surrounds the civics lessons imparted in the breezy Astro the Alien Learns Civics series (6 titles). In an Alf-like set-up, Astro (a seafoam-green extraterrestrial shaped like a walking gumdrop) lives with an American family, and he has lots of questions about life in the U.S. Siblings Ben and Eva show him the ropes by embarking on illuminating fieldtrips. In Astro the Alien Learns about Public Holidays, the trio hops into Astro’s spaceship to travel to a variety of celebrations (and even back in time!); Presidents’ Day, Juneteenth, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the Fourth of July, and Veterans Day all get brief introductions. Light but nevertheless informative, this series also strives to help strengthen reading and fluency skills with its simple sentences and appended activities. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
