School Library Journal - 12/06/2024 Gr 9 Up—A wholesome and adorable volume that blends elements from series like "The Girl From the Other Side" and "Witch Hat Atelier!" In the midst of a fantastical world, a disguised human child named Somali relies on a dying golem to help her find a safe haven. As they travel across lands full of spiritual and beastlike creatures, a father-daughter-like bond develops and friendships form. Unlike other "healing" series, a wistfulness and unease lingers beneath the story's endearing tone because the effects of xenophobia still permeate this world. Humanity itself was hunted to near extinction, and despite the pleasant temperament of most residents, some become threatening when they sense humans. At about seven years old, Somali can only view events through a more earnest emotional lens—she is genuinely childlike in her curiosity, playfulness, and desire for connection. The golem is an equally delightful character, and while readers will bond with the child, the guardian figure's journey to becoming an empathetic and reliable individual is just as relatable. Adding to the book's quality, the artistic attention to detail in the character and creature designs, everyday moments, and landscapes work in tandem to form a lush world. VERDICT An exquisitely depicted journey of a found family that reminds readers of empathy's role in creating a kinder world.—Rachel Forbes - Copyright 2024 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
