Summary:
Freya lives in a castle where she has everything a girl could want loving parents, loads of books AND marshmallows. Freya doesn't understand why it's always knights who get to be brave, bold dragon slayers, so one morning she decides to go and slay one for herself. Unbeknownst to her, a dragon, tired of a steady diet of too-crunchy knights, happens to be looking for a sweet and tender girl to eat. Surely, when the two come face to face, a mighty battle will ensue! Or will it?

Booklist - 12/01/2024 Once upon a time, there was a girl named Freya who, more than anything, wanted to slay a dragon like all the knights did in fairy tales. And once upon a time, there was also a dragon who, more than anything, wanted a girl to eat because he was tired of too-crunchy knights. One day, they both set out, but when they find each other after much searching, they're both in for quite the surprise, as Freya ultimately outsmarts the dragon with a bag of delicious marshmallows. With deliberately childlike illustrations that recall Ed Emberley’s fingerprint artwork, Feeney uses digitally assembled monoprinting and colored pencils to create fun and fantastical images that keep the story firmly based in its intended silliness. The transparent coloring of the dragon, Freya’s wild mop of unruly curls, and the block printing of the landscapes all work to keep a tale that is otherwise quite full of good-natured chomping and stabbing very light and enjoyable. Feeney's storytelling is original, well worded, and humorous, with an overt nod to girl power and an ultimate message of friendship and acceptance. - Copyright 2024 Booklist.
