School Library Journal - 10/01/2015 PreS-Gr 1—Maya's mother is expecting, and everyone is helping get ready for the new baby. Her grandmother declares, "We're nesting!" Watching Nana painting the crib and friends bringing in new furniture and toys, Maya wonders what she can do. Then she remembers bird nests she's seen and decides to make a nest—a quilt nest! Nana helps her turn her design of blue robin eggs in a nest surrounded by leaves into a beautiful soft and cozy baby quilt. Full-color mixed-media illustrations—collages of fabric scraps and cut paper detailed with watercolors, thread, colored pencils, and felt tip pens—portray multiethnic friends and family coming together to celebrate new life. Instructions for making a simple quilt for a favorite doll or stuffed animal are appended. VERDICT A warm story about getting ready to be a big sister.—Frances E.
