School Library Journal - 05/01/2011 PreS-Gr 1—Downing has taken the traditional song and put a New York spin on it. Instead of the usual foods assigned to each day of the week, this story depicts children eating apples, pastrami, Nathan's hot dogs, and bagels and lox (possibly introducing them to some new vocabulary and food choices). Back matter includes a "Word Menu" describing the history of the Big Apple favorites, a list of official state foods, and sheet music for the song. Each spread offers a large-print line (or two) of text opposite a full-page, collage illustration that suits the mood of the book perfectly. A diverse group of children, including a girl in a wheelchair, is featured in the eye-catching artwork. A fun twist on a classic, to read aloud or to introduce to beginning readers.—Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH - Copyright 2011 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
