Full Text Reviews:

School Library Journal - 05/01/2025 Gr 2–5—In this second installment of the charming "Bodega Cats" series, we meet Yesenia and her new kitten Candy. Yesenia is struggling with anxiety and the pressure to do well in school, a condition that causes her to pull out her hair. Her doctor suggests that taking care of a pet would be helpful, and Yesenia is overjoyed to get a kitten from her uncle's bodega. Candy, who's perspective we also get, is an energetic young kitten excited to be out and about in the world, so excited that she jumps out of Yesenia's window and finds herself in New York City on her own. This thoughtful book does a great job of exploring anxiety and Yesenia's specific experience balancing the very high expectations of her parents. The chapters from her cat's point of view provide a cute balance that will have readers rooting for the two to be reunited. VERDICT This diverse, well-rounded series is recommended for all collections. - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
