Booklist - 10/15/2015 During WWII, Lizzie and her brother, Peter, are evacuated to the Yorkshire countryside, where Fred, his wife, Madge, and her sister, Elsie, take them in. When Lizzie finds a baby crying in a field, she carries it back to the house. Soon Madge is insisting that Elsie will raise the baby, and the children must keep this secret. Meanwhile, the gypsies encamped nearby, including the distraught mother and Elijah, the baby’s brother, are searching for the lost child. Initially hostile to Lizzie, Elijah discovers what she knows and pleads for her help. Surrounded by adults who are misguided, incompetent, or reluctant to act, Lizzie is guided by her strong sense of justice and compassion. In her first novel, Blackford portrays even minor characters deftly and often shows the reasons behind their actions. The third-person narrative sometimes switches from Lizzie’s point of view to Elijah’s, giving readers a more balanced account of events and an insider’s view of the Roma camp. A satisfying chapter book with a well-realized historical setting and a stout-hearted heroine. - Copyright 2015 Booklist.
