School Library Journal - 05/01/2025 Gr 2–4—Young mermaids train to become sworn protectors of their realm in this magical series. This installment picks up where the last book left off, and a full-page summary of the previous events helps orient young readers. Princess Finn and her friends, Moon and Link, set off on a quest to find the Black Pearl to prevent another attack from Rozaro, an evil shark magician determined to steal the queen's throne. The book balances short sentences, brief chapters, and simple language while weaving a complex storyline, though at times, this results in a choppy narrative. Simplifying certain plot points could have improved clarity, but the concept remains engaging, and the grayscale illustrations are expressive and plentiful. VERDICT A purchase for large libraries and collections where Branches books are popular. - Copyright 2025 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
