Booklist - 12/15/2019 After patiently waiting, Warren and her husband finally get the call that their German shepherd puppy has been born. But there’s a catch: he’s a singleton, meaning he’s an “only puppy,” and, without littermates to help him learn crucial lessons, he could have behavioral problems. Despite this caveat, the couple welcomes Solo into their home. Solo is a beautiful, smart, and stubborn pup who is antagonistic toward other dogs, but he shows strong scenting abilities. This prompts Warren to take the pup on a training exercise to gauge his potential for becoming a cadaver search dog. In this young-reader’s adaptation of Warren’s 2013 adult book, she chronicles their progress and failures (over a 10-year span) as she and Solo train and work as a cadaver search team. Numerous photographs of Solo add interest as Warren also provides substantial background information about cadaver dogs/teams, managing to inject a degree of lightness into her discussion of a serious forensic activity. Whether readers consider the topic macabre or fascinating (or both!), this unique offering is worth sniffing out. - Copyright 2019 Booklist.
