Booklist - 12/01/2021 Growing up within a flock of lovebirds, Lou never doubts himself or his family’s affection for him. Still, when he notices other birds, he can’t help admiring them and, sometimes, wanting to join them. When he decides to swoop and loop in flight like the pelicans, his parents cheer him on (and rescue him when he collides with a tree trunk). Despite Lou’s best efforts to stand on one leg in the water, his career as a flamingo ends with a splash (and encouraging words from his folks). After similarly disappointing stints as a screeching nightingale and a reflective but increasingly lonely rock, Lou realizes that life as a lovebird is actually quite “lovely.” While the theme is familiar, Sauer’s narrative unfolds with an appealing main character, well-paced action, and accessible humor. What kids wouldn’t want parents who respond to their outlandish ideas with phrases like “Okie-dokie, artichokie”? Reflecting her background in animation, Laberis creates expressive characters within vivid scenes that make good use of repeated shapes. A lively, colorful picture book. - Copyright 2021 Booklist.
