School Library Journal - 04/01/2020 Gr 3–6—Readers just getting into martial arts will appreciate the wealth of information presented in this series. The books distinguish between martial arts that are more grappling focused, like Brazilian jujitsu (BJJ) and jujitsu; striking martial arts, like karate and kung fu; and defensive martial arts, like aikido and tae kwon do. Fans of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and mixed-martial arts competitions will recognize BJJ, a mix of judo and jujitsu, as well as its parent forms of judo and jujitsu from their many binds. Tae kwon do and aikido focus on defusing, dodging, and blocking. The books all emphasize the health benefits of martial arts as well as how useful they can be in self-defense. VERDICT With straight forward, clear writing and images, this is an informative option to update your shelves. - Copyright 2020 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
