Booklist - 05/01/2023 This accessible offering tackles evolution and natural selection through case studies of four representative animals. Introductory material asserts that out of the countless number of species on Earth, only humans live pretty much anywhere they want to by changing natural habitats, and the ensuing text emphasizes adaptations resulting from human actions. Chapters describe how these evolutionary changes came about (due to poachers, many rhinos are now born without horns; the desire for pink, pretty, pleasant pigs led to the domestication of wild boars; Industrial Revolution soot inspired peppered moths to mutate to black coloring; city-dwelling lizards have super sticky toe pads that provide better grip on brick and glass surfaces), offer solutions and alternative behaviors, and highlight an individual or organization making a difference for positive change. Pages are filled with graphics, illustrations, and sidebars; back matter includes a lengthy list of resources. The sample situations will resonate with kids, the tone is informative but not overly alarmist, and the messages about ecological stewardship go down nice and easy. - Copyright 2023 Booklist.
