Booklist - 02/15/2019 *Starred Review* Though the books in the Absolute Expert series (2 new titles) pair high-interest topics with dynamic, magazine-style layouts, the information they contain is surprisingly robust. These new installments delve into popular scientific subjects, dinosaurs and volcanoes, with the assistance of a “National Geographic Explorer” at work in the field today. These experts chime in periodically with personal experiences they’ve had on (or training for) the job. Absolute Expert: Volcanoes does an exceptional job of explaining the different types of volcanoes, eruptions, and lavas, not to mention geothermal features, like hot springs and mud pools—all illustrated with well-chosen photos and the occasional map or graphic. Volcanologist Soldati offers insight into the challenges of her work without mitigating her passion. A particularly interesting chapter examines different cultures’ myths about volcanoes and how nature recovers after an eruption. The books’ attractive design and tone will appeal to casual readers, but even those with serious interests will unearth scads of new information. - Copyright 2019 Booklist.
