Booklist - 03/15/2023 This poignant and haunting illustrated tale follows two siblings as they embark on a treacherous journey to find a new home beyond the borders of their homeland. With most of the visuals employing grayscale watercolor punctuated with vibrant, almost otherworldly masks worn by the children, the focus here is on escaping the horrors and stressors of one’s homeland and pursuing hope and happiness in a new world. The protagonist comes to find the journey, which begins as a “game,” tiring and frightening, but his older sister keeps him emotionally buoyant and supported. Meza’s emotional text and memorable illustrations are inspired by the stories she learned of immigrant and refugee children and infused with her own personal experiences as a child who migrated and moved around a lot, searching for a place to feel truly like home. What begins as a game for young migrants to “cross the line” turns into a sometimes traumatic, sometimes wondrous adventure that readers will be compelled to mull over in their minds. - Copyright 2023 Booklist.
