Booklist - 03/15/2022 *Starred Review* After learning a few rabbit codes of behavior, readers are taken on a journey of discovery with a small gray bunny. When Rabbit attempts to grab a juicy carrot just past a sign that warns “Stop! Beyond the Burrow!” she falls, bounces, and eventually ends up in a river—very unrabbit-like things to do. Everything is new and frightening, and all she wants to do is return to her cozy home. On her journey she learns to climb, makes new “not-rabbit” friends, and acknowledges that even if something is different from what she’s used to, it can still be okay. Charming digital and mixed-media illustrations feature tiny rabbits in their warren with signposts expounding messages such as “Hopping is Happiness,” “Stay Calm and Eat Carrots,” and “Hide Not Seek.” Details of the burrow dug into a hillside include a rabbit with spectacles teaching youngsters about the many features that “not-rabbit” animals possess and should be avoided. Humorous illustrations show Rabbit teaching other creatures how to hop and learning their movements such as hanging, swinging, and camouflaging. Rabbit’s major discovery is that life is “less scary with friends,” and they can come in all sizes, shapes, and species. This sweet tale may encourage some youngsters to face new experiences with less trepidation. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
