Booklist - 06/01/2022 In this follow-up to Chunky (2021), middle-schooler Hudi Mercado is recognized for his humor but is still sitting in the cafeteria with no one but his titular imaginary mascot to keep him company. Worse still, he’s gaining an unearned reputation as a troublemaker. The problem intensifies at the Jewish summer camp he’s forced to attend, mainly thanks to his new best friend, Pepe, another Jewish Latino comedian and the only other person who can see Chunky. Pepe has some secrets and some family issues that drive him to ever-harsher pranks, and the usually friendless Hudi, desperate to hold on to his pal, is dragged along. Hudi’s better nature, as personified by the not-so-devilish Chunky, wins out, with the help of some understanding adults and a hard-earned realization about the trap of other people’s perceptions. This sequel deepens the emotional investment of the previous installment considerably and effectively, honoring a sense of caring and connection but never losing sight of its humor. Visually exaggerated emotions and expressions, not to mention the ever-so-huggable character design, highlight that humor with a flourish. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
