Summary:
Howard thinks he's the most exceptional creature in the entire rainforest. That's because no other creature is as fantastically camouflaged as he is! But when Howard learns that other creatures can be camouflaged, too, he doesn't feel so special anymore. In fact, he might just be ... GASP ... average! Who could ever love a completely unexceptional gecko like Howard?

School Library Journal - 08/01/2022 PreS-Gr 2— Meddour develops an unexpectedly likable character in the self-proclaimed exceptional Howard. Deeming himself so, Howard completely misses the other beautiful and exceptional animals in the rainforest. As Howard travels through the gorgeous scenery, the various animals point out their own versions of camouflage that provide safety as well as contribute to their beauty. The author crafts the text to simulate the vocal patterns of the animal personified and keeps the text flowing with creative placement and imaging. Saldana's exquisite combination of watercolor, pencil, and digital media exemplify the beauty of the rainforest. VERDICT Readers will delight in discovering hidden creatures along with Howard; especially recommended for young readers who may be meeting the tropical flora and fauna for the first time.—Brittany McMahon - Copyright 2022 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
