Booklist - 10/01/2018 Alas for Anne Boleyn, being included in the high/low History Uncut series (8 titles) doesn’t save her neck from the sword. It does, however, bring her story to readers, who will doubtless be fascinated by her life and (especially) her death. Prefaced by “The Story You Know,” a very brief summary of her life, the remaining six chapters give a more detailed but breezy account of Boleyn, from her childhood and education to becoming Henry VIII’s second wife and an instrumental player in the Reformation. Occasionally Loh-Hagan’s short sentences can oversimplify matters or be misconstrued, but she nicely portrays Boleyn as a strong woman ahead of her time. Period portraits add context, but photos of modern individuals in courtly costume are unfortunately anachronistic. An appended time line and critical-thinking prompts conclude. - Copyright 2018 Booklist.
