Booklist - 05/01/2017 Shiny silverfish glint against blue brushstroke backgrounds in this story of bravery and perspective. Flash is swimming happily through the ocean when he spies a gigantic black object, which he assumes is a mountain. But when the mountain starts crying, Flash knows he’s wrong: “What can this big black thing be?” After swimming far away to see the object in its entirety, Flash sees a baby whale, crying because it has lost its parents. Flash calls on his other fishy friends to search the depths, and, before long, the whale family is reunited. While Flash’s remark about the crying whale—“Why are you crying? I thought that’s what little babies did”—might strike some as mean-spirited, Flash’s generosity is ultimately redeeming. The bold, eye-catching graphics, from the soft blue backgrounds and glittery foil fish to the page-filling whales with crisp, white teeth, are likely the biggest draw. Hand this Israeli import, originally published in 1990 and released in English for the first time, to kiddos who love undersea stories, such as the ever-popular Rainbow Fish series. - Copyright 2017 Booklist.
