Booklist - 03/01/2019 This is a lovely look at a mother-son relationship over the course of a lifetime, represented by their hands—holding, waving, and supporting. With a mix of full-page spreads and single-page illustrations facing blocks of text with small spot art, it marks intimate and quietly important moments: playing patty-cake, soothing hurt fingers, walking to school, baking together, feeding birds, waving goodbye, and ultimately being reunited again as the young man returns home to care for his aging parent. The rhymes are gentle (“The baby wakes. The baby sleeps / And grows. One day he stands. / He falters like a wobbly colt. / His mother holds his hands”), and the art depicts the brunette mother and blond child in pencil, gouache, and watercolor, with a haze that elicits memories recalled back through the years. The book is unabashedly nostalgic, with sentences on the first and last pages sentimentally showing the circle of life, and full of joy. - Copyright 2019 Booklist.
