Full Text Reviews:

Booklist - 12/01/2019 A loose narrative about brown-skinned Lu moving through her week’s activities provides numerous opportunities to introduce a variety of patterns. Boldly colored acrylic, gouache, watercolor, and collage illustrations show Lu and friends walking in the rain, “pitter, patter, pat!” A “milk, apple, cracker, cheese” snack is laid out on a series of plates under repeating lines of text. Movements such as dancing or playing soccer can follow patterns, and Lu finds more examples on a piano keyboard, on animals at the zoo, at a park, at a lake, in buildings downtown, and in her grandmother’s quilts. The puzzle-like spreads invite readers to consider what type of patterns appear on each page and then to anticipate an element and fill in what comes next. The concluding pages act as an answer key, providing summary explanations about patterns and the places Lu found them throughout the book. Some repeating arrangements are easy to spot, while others are more challenging, making the book applicable to a range of ages. - Copyright 2019 Booklist.
