Bulletin for the Center... - 09/01/2016 In this sequel to The Book of Storms (BCCB 2/15), Danny is haunted by nightmares after saving his parents. Enter Cath, a girl looking for a change from her horrific life. A talking hare brings the two together in a desperate quest to save Tom, Danny’s cousin who made a dark deal at the end of the first book. Sammael, an evil being who gathers souls and turns them into dreams, is even more venomous after Danny accidentally causes the death of his dog, and he’s on a quest to kill Danny, using both the hare and Tom as bait to get Danny close. The parallel world of Chromos, the only hint of beauty that Cath has ever experienced and a terrifying reminder for Danny of what magic can yield, is compellingly described, and it also works as a useful point of divergence for the two kids as they experience it in startlingly different ways. New readers are going to feel a bit lost by this middle book in the anticipated trilogy, but fans of the earlier volume will find it does a worthy job of picking up the threads and showing how grief (for Sammael) and constant fear (for Danny) can narrow life in unendurable ways.
