School Library Journal - 10/01/2023 Gr 1–4—How do you get kids interested in science careers? Try this graphic novel that introduces over 20 heroes of science from various exciting fields of study. The book is framed as a discussion between a child and his mother. After hearing on the news that scientists are saving the world, he asks, "who is working on time travel?" She explains that other scientists are working on that, as well as many other incredible things. As she describes various projects around the world, she shares details about a diverse range of people. Illustrations show scientists at work and the child and his mother joining in—diving like Eugenie Clark or studying volcanic rocks like Haraldur Sigurdsson. Famous figures from history, such as Mary Anning, and recent COVID-19 vaccine researchers Ugur Sahin and Özlem Türeci, are included in this roll call of cool science workers. Each description segues into the next; the final panels show the child tucked into bed and mother explaining that scientists were once curious children just like him. Back matter includes short profiles and images of each scientist mentioned along with suggestions for further reading. VERDICT A helpful addition to libraries looking for introductory texts on science careers.—Suzanne Costner - Copyright 2023 Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and/or School Library Journal used with permission.
