Booklist - 11/01/2016 The things we do for love! A little boy starts school and immediately falls in love. Sylvia, the object of his affection, knows all about birds and is constantly watching and studying them. The boy admires her devotion and sets out to win her approval by building and wearing a bird costume. Every day. All the time. The text and illustrations, rendered in scratchy pencil and digital collage, work together in an unusual but effective manner: while the text is describing school and meeting Sylvia, the images show the beginnings of the bird costume, which comes to show the boy’s inner progression. As he constructs it and then wears it through his daily activities, we see it become torn and bedraggled. In the end, when Sylvia truly sees him, she removes the costume and accepts the boy for who he is. Artistically beautiful but conceptually challenging, the best audience for this picture book may be older readers, grades four and above, who are ready to think beyond themselves and contemplate their relationships with others. - Copyright 2016 Booklist.
