Booklist - 08/08/2023 Part of the Young Zoologist series, this field guide to the gray wolf lets children imagine they are scientists heading out to study this wilderness animal. Following a “Fact File” with quick gray wolf facts (such as height, weight, location, and prey), Cassidy, a gray wolf expert, begins with a double-page visual guide to gear needed for cold, harsh environments, including pencils (pen ink can freeze) and an antenna for tracking radio collars. Each ensuing double-page spread targets gray wolf characteristics and behaviors, from an overview of their physical appearance and life in a pack to methods of communication and hunting. Large-scale scenes in colorful, kid-friendly illustrations blend with smaller cutouts and chunked, descriptive text, resulting in a pleasing design that’s accessible to browsing readers and focused students alike. Final spreads offer more gray wolf details, such as their friends and enemies (including their special relationship with ravens), their role as dog ancestors, depictions of them in folklore (including their negative reputation in fairy tales), and human efforts to protect and rewild them. - Copyright 2023 Booklist.
