Summary:
High above the forest floor, nestled in the needles of a Lodgepole pine tree, hangs a pine cone. For forty years the pinecone has borne witness to the growth of the forest and the daily life of its inhabitants. Across the forest a neglected campfire's spark catches fire and the forest is ablaze. Forest animals flee. In the aftermath of the devastation, the forest can regenerate--thanks in part, to serotinous species (like the Lodgepole pine) that can only grow anew when the seeds face fire.
