Booklist - 03/15/2020 The animal kingdom has always unanimously voted for Lion to be president, but when a mouse suggests that uncontested elections are pointless, the system changes. Suddenly, one of each animal group decides to run. A mouse promises that mice will no longer be eaten. A cat promises that cats will always have mice to eat. Ants want everyone else to work longer hours. A sheep wants to outlaw shearing and knitting—and so on. When the votes are tallied, each candidate receives one vote—except for Lion, who didn’t vote at all—making them each president of their group. Lawless chaos prevails until Lion is called upon to restore order. Baltscheit’s silly take on elections thankfully avoids any overtly moralistic message, with Lion reclaiming power in the end, albeit while taking on advisers for the first time. This, more than anything, is a fun thought experiment on animal—and human?—nature, with much of the fun coming through in Boutavant’s (Dumpster Dog!, 2019) hilarious characterizations. A happy alternative for introducing elections. - Copyright 2020 Booklist.
