Booklist - 02/15/2017 Primarily using a simple two-word exchange throughout, this depicts the special relationship of a little boy and his mother. The day begins with him bouncing on her bed, asking “Rutabaga?” to which she replies, “Boo!” Subsequently, these two words provide the text to various scenarios, sometimes using font size and punctuation to help denote specific connotations and feelings, from his sadness watching her leave for work (Rutabaga in smaller font, trailing ellipses) to happier moments, like video-chatting with her later (her cheerful “Boo!” in bigger font). Eventually, Mom returns and reassures the boy at bedtime with, “I always love you.” Watercolor-and-pencil illustrations, rife with childlike touches, feature settings and activities that will be familiar to many children. Despite the varying situations and the pair’s expressions giving context for understanding their exchanges, “Rutabaga” and “Boo” may not click with all kids, making the intended meanings unclear. Still, the mother and son’s mutual affection is evident throughout, and adults and children will appreciate the concept and comforts of sharing a unique language and routine. - Copyright 2017 Booklist.
